FFA is Selling Poinsettias Again This Year

by Mr. Eisenhauer

November 10, 2009

As school was starting in August, the 9th grade class received 3-5 inch poinsettia cuttings to use as a class project of growing and preparing them for sale during the Christmas season.  They transplanted them into 6 inch pots, pinched their growth points to manipulate them into becoming fuller.  Along with the daily care of watering and fertilizing them for optimum growth, the students also adjusted the light available to increase growth and induce them into changing colors for the Christmas season.

The holiday season is upon us and our poinsettias are starting to change colors just as we planned.  We must have done something extra well this year because they are larger and fuller than they have ever been in the past.

These plants are being offered for sale by the 9th grade class to help offset the cost of purchasing the cuttings and supplies for the class project.  The cost will be $5.00 per plant.  There are several shades of red and pink as well as some white plants available.  The poinsettias will be sold at several school functions such as a one act play performance, Christmas programs, fall honors night, and basketball games.  Also, you may make arrangements with the students or advisors to purchase some directly.

Occasionally plants die because of poor root development but there is no way of knowing that before sales so we are offering that if a plant should die, we will replace it regardless of the circumstance.  Be sure to brighten your holiday season with poinsettias raised by the local FFA students.
